What is General Dentistry?

Aug 9 • 1 minute read

General dentists make up the majority of dentists practicing in the United States. Their education includes three or more years of an undergraduate degree, along with four years of dental school. These doctors can work in a practice or for the military, and have the experience to take care of most dental needs.

At {practice name}, your general dentist works with you to develop a customized oral hygiene plan that incorporates dental examinations, teeth cleanings, and X-rays to uncover or treat dental problems as soon as possible. We have created this guide to help you understand general dentistry as a dental field:

Dental Health and Overall Health

Normally, the body’s natural immunity, along with good oral health care, can keep oral bacteria under control. However, without proper dental hygiene bacteria can spread and cause dental issues, such as tooth decay and periodontal disease. Poor dental care and neglect can result in many serious conditions, including cardiovascular disease, respiratory infections, infertility, and pregnancy complications.

Prevention through Oral Hygiene

The best way to minimize health issues caused by harmful bacteria is to practice good dental hygiene every day. A healthy smile requires the following:

  • Brushing for two minutes, twice a day
  • Flossing
  • Avoiding tobacco products
  • Limiting intake of sugary foods and drinks
  • Using dentist-recommended toothpaste and mouthwash
  • Eating a well-balanced diet

Taking the proper steps to preventing problems like gingivitis and periodontal disease can go a long way in decreasing the risk of more serious health complications throughout the body.
